biography

Professor Seyed E. Hasnain (DoB: April 13, 1954), Ph.D., D.Sc. (h.c.), D.Med.Sc. (h.c.) is an Invited Professor, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi. A Distinguished Research Professor at the Institute of Life Sciences he was the Vice Chancellor of University of Hyderabad (UoH). He taught at Delhi University, worked at the National Institute of Immunology, New Delhi, and was the first Director of Centre for DNA Fingerprinting and Diagnostics (CDFD), Hyderabad.

Hasnain lab works on Infection biology, molecular pathogenesis of infectious organisms and
designing novel intervention strategies with a current focus on Functional Molecular Infection Epidemiology of pathogenic bacterium. Studying the dissemination dynamics, using genetic typing of M.tb isolates from India, he showed the presence of ancestral isolates as the predominant form circulating in India which could explain the lack of concordance between bacterial load and disease burden in the Indian population. Functional characterization of M.tb hypothetical PE/PPE protein family revealed their importance as diagnostics, vaccine candidates and drug targets. He earlier contributed extensively to our understanding of the transcriptional regulation and high level expression of heterologous genes in the baculovirus insect cell system. His earlier collaborative work on HBV generated some novel findings with clinical applications. He has >240 publications in peer-reviewed journals of high impact, and >dozen patents. He has mentored >100 PhD, MD and Post-Doc students four of whom received the prestigious INSA Young Scientist Medal.

Hasnain was/is associated with several journals e.g. Emerging Infectious Diseases (International Society for Genomic and Evolutionary Microbiology, Italy). A Fellow of all major Science Academies of India (FNA, FASc, FNASc), he is also a Member of the German National Academy of Sciences, Leopoldina and is one of the youngest to be elected as Fellow of TWAS, Trieste, Italy. Internationally, Hasnain is a recipient of the prestigious Humboldt Research Prize, awarded by the Alexander-von-Humboldt Foundation, Germany; as well as the very exclusive Robert Koch Fellowship, of the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), Berlin (an Award he shared with Professor Reinhard Kurth, Former Director, RKI and is the ONLY Indian so far to receive this Award), G.D. Birla Award, Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, FICCI Award, J.C. Bose National Fellow Award, Ranbaxy Research Award, Goyal Award, Bhasin Award and several others. He also received the Padma Shri (Civilian Award) from His Excellency, the President of India.

Hasnain was a Member of Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (SAC-PM, 2004-2014) and a Former Member of Scientific Advisory Committee to Union Cabinet. Member of the University Grants Commission (UGC), he was the Chairman of Biotech Advisory Council, Govt. of Andhra Pradesh and a Member of Biotech Advisory Council of many other State Govts. Chairman of the Academic Committee, PGIMER, Chandigarh, Former Member of Governing Council of Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla, Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore,), etc, Hasnain has been/is Chairman/Member of Advisory/Governing Council of several institutions, policy-making bodies for S&T and Higher education. He serves on the Board of Directors of LVPrasad Eye Institute, Hyderabad; Indian Immunological Limited, Hyderabad; Suven Life Sciences; ICICI Knowledge Park; Dr Reddy’s Institute of Life Sciences; and several other Trusts and Societies.

Hasnain as an Institution Builder:

During the tenure of Prof. Hasnain as VC, UoH was firmly established as a Premier University of India. Last year, UoH was ranked within the top 2 Universities of the country in S&T by the Ministry of Science & Technology, Government of India and as a consequence, received the very prestigious PURSEAward (Rs 10 crore grant/year) from the PrimeMinister of India. In the NISTADS, Govt of India analyses released in November, 2010, UoH has pushed Delhi University from the #1 position. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) of India awarded UoH an overall grading of 97% (whichremains the highest score given to any University till date). The International SCOPUS database analyses ofmultidisciplinary areas ranked UoH as the Top University in India. As per the latest Q&S ranking (a respected ranking Institution based in China), UoH figures at #34 in terms of quality of research output (no University from India figures within top 90), and at #5 in teacher student ratio, amongst the top 200Institutions of higher education in Asia. In the latestUK Research Council survey of Centres of Excellence in Social Sciences and Humanities, few UoH Departments figure prominently.

Contribution to science policy and administration:

Having served the Membership of the Sectional Committees and Council of the National Academies of Sciences of India, he is now a Member of the Sectional Committee (Microbiology & Immunolgy) to elect new members to the German National Academy of Sciences Leopoldina. He isalso a Member of the International Advisory Board, Euro Patho Genomics Network of Excellence and is the Founding Patron of the ISOGEM (International Society for Genomic and Evolutionary Microbiology, Italy). Hasnain was re-invited by the Prime Minister of India to serve another 5-year term as a Member of Science Advisory Council to the Prime Minister (SAC-PM) and was also a Member of Scientific Advisory Committee to the Union Cabinet. He was Chairman of Biotech Advisory Council, Government of Andhra Pradesh and a Member of Biotech Advisory Council of many other StateGovernments. As Member of Governing Councilsof Indian Institute of Advanced Studies, Shimla,Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, IIM, Kozhikode, and several institutions, policy-makingbodies for S&T and Higher education in the country his contributions remain significant and often considered as a paradigm shift. He serves on the Board ofDirectors of Indian Immunologicals Limited, ICICI Knowledge Park, Suven Life Sciences, and several other Trusts and Societies.
